Vryokastro is the ancient capital of the island, with an area of 285 acres within walls. Archaeological research has revealed the Acropolis, two necropolises, public buildings, underground tanks, the sanctuary of Demetra at the top of the Acropolis and a port. The city was abandoned in about the 7th century AD. when the inhabitants moved to the Castle of Oria. On the beach of Kolona, the ancient port of the island’s capital, the architectural remains of the port and the foundations of the coastal walls are still visible.
