It was the medieval capital of the island from the 7th century, after the abandonment of Vryokastro, until the 16th century when it was destroyed by the Ottomans. No archaeological excavations have been carried out but the medieval remains, ruined walls, houses, churches, storerooms, administrative buildings and tanks are interesting and the view is spectacular.
